The Promises of God

This morning, we are in a sermon series called “Exodus: The Victorious God.” Pastor Mike has titled today’s message “The Promises of God.”

The command of the Lord to Pharaoh: Obey me by letting my people go. The response of Pharaoh to the Lord: Disobedience and refusing to acknowledge the Lord as God. The story of Exodus is a war between the Lord and the gods of Egypt.

Exodus 5:22-23
So Moses went back to the Lord and asked, “Lord, why have you caused trouble for this people? And why did you ever send me? 23 Ever since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in your name he has caused trouble for this people, and you haven’t rescued your people at all.”

Remember God had a purpose and a plan and it would happen in his perfect timing.

When Moses was in despair he went to the Lord in prayer!

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

What a Friend we have in Jesus,

All our sins and griefs to bear!

What a privilege to carry

Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,

O what needless pain we bear,

All because we do not carry

Everything to God in prayer!

The Promises of God

Exodus 6:1-8
But the Lord replied to Moses, “Now you will see what I will do to Pharaoh: because of a strong hand he will let them go, and because of a strong hand he will drive them from his land.”

2 Then God spoke to Moses, telling him, “I am the Lord. 3 I appeared to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob as God Almighty, but I was not known to them by my name ‘the Lord.’ 4 I also established my covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan, the land they lived in as aliens. 5 Furthermore, I have heard the groaning of the Israelites, whom the Egyptians are forcing to work as slaves, and I have remembered my covenant.

6 “Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment. 7 I will take you as my people, and I will be your God. You will know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you to the land that I swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, and I will give it to you as a possession. I am the Lord.”

God responds with patience and grace towards Moses.
God reminds Moses of who he is and what he has done.

Exodus 6:6-8
“Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the Lord, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them.

1. The Promise of God: Deliver and Redeem Them From Slavery.

This echoes God’s promise to us: God has delivered and redeemed us from sin and death.

Galatians 1:3b-4
…our Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from this present evil age, according to the will of our God and Father.

Ephesians 2:4-5
But God, who is rich in mercy, because of his great love that he had for us, 5 made us alive with Christ even though we were dead in trespasses. You are saved by grace!

John 3:16-17
For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. 17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

2. The Promise of God: To Take Them into a Special Relationship as his Own People.

This echoes God’s promise to us: God has allowed us to have a relationship with him as his people/children.

1 John 3:1-2
See what great love the Father has given us that we should be called God’s children—and we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it didn’t know him. 2 Dear friends, we are God’s children now…

John 1:11-12
He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name…

3. The promise of God: To Bring Them to the Promised Land.

This echoes God’s promise to us: God is always with us through the journey of life.

Psalm 23:4
Even when I go through the darkest valley, I fear no danger, for you are with me; your rod and your staff—they comfort me.

Isaiah 41:10
Do not fear, for I am with you; do not be afraid, for I am your God. I will strengthen you; I will help you; I will hold on to you with my righteous right hand.

1 Corinthians 3:23
…you belong to Christ.

Isaiah 43:1-3
Now this is what the Lord says — the one who created you, Jacob, and the one who formed you, Israel — “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are mine. 2 When you pass through the waters, I will be with you, and the rivers will not overwhelm you. When you walk through the fire,

you will not be scorched, and the flame will not burn you. 3 For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, and your Savior.

4. The Promise of God: To Give Them the Promised Land.

This echoes God’s promise to us: God will one day give his people rest in the heavenly promised land.

1 Peter 1:3-4
Because of his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead 4 and into an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading, kept in heaven for you.

John 14:1-6
“Don’t let your heart be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me. 2 In my Father’s house are many rooms. If it were not so, would I have told you that I am going to prepare a place for you? 3 If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come again and take you to myself, so that where I am you may be also. 4 You know the way to where I am going.”

5 “Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where you’re going. How can we know the way?”

6 Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
